Sussex-born actress of an Irish mother and an Italian father. Gained wide public recognition in the TV adaptation Mary Wesley's The Camomile Lawn (1992). Other notable films include Sirens (1994, Best Actress nomination), Brassed Off (1996) where she starred opposite Ewan McGregor and Dark Blue World (2001). Won New York Critics Circle award for Best Supporting Actress playing Ophelia opposite Ralph Fiennes in Hamlet on Broadway.
