After studying at RADA, Bates appeared on stage in John Osborne's Look Back in Anger (1956), and Pinter's The Caretaker (1960). He made his film debut in The Entertainer (1960), which he followed with appearances in some of the most popular films of the decade including, A Kind of Loving (1962), Zorba The Greek (1965), Georgy Girl (1966), Far From the Madding Crowd (1967) and Women in Love (1969). He appeared in David Storey's In Celebration (1969) and Simon Gray's Butley (1971), for which he won a Tony Award.
