Ham Mukasa

(1870-1956), Secretary to the Katikiro of Uganda

Sitter in 1 portrait
The son of Makabugo Sensalire, a chief in Buddu (present day Masaka District), Mukasa converted to Christianity at a young age. As a result, he suffered serious injury in the 1886 massacre of the Christians by Mwanga II. He married the daughter of a former chief minister of Uganda. He was a page in the court of Mutesa I of Buganda (in present day Uganda), later becoming secretary to Apolo Kagwa. He was fluent in both English and Swahili. He is noted for writing one of the first glossaries of the Ganda language.
