John Bowles (1701?-1779), Printseller and publisher
Artist associated with 113 portraits
John Bowles was part of the Bowles family of print and map sellers. He was the son of Thomas Bowles. In partnership with his elder brother, also named Thomas Bowles, John took over his father's business when the latter died in 1721. In 1743, the brothers published prints of the paintings that decorated Vauxhall Gardens and from about that date they launched a long series of topographical views depicting the sights of London and the surrounding villages.
