Maximilien François Marie Isidore de Robespierre

(1758-1794), French lawyer and politician

Sitter in 4 portraits
Politician during the French Revolution. Robespierre was elected to the National Assembly of 1789-91. His defence of democratic principles made him popular, while his impartiality won him the nickname of 'the Incorruptible'. As leader of the Jacobins in the National Convention, he supported the execution of Louis XVI in 1793 and was elected to the revolutionary Committee of Public Safety in the same year. His zeal for social reform and attacks on the excesses of extremists made him enemies on both right and left. In 1794 he was overthrown and executed.
