From 1949 until 1954 I worked in the Editorial and Book Production Department of the publishing firm of C. Arthur Pearson Ltd, Tower House, Southampton St., Strand, London. Part of my duties was to take manuscripts etc to the office of Sir Neville Pearson. His secretary was Stevie Smith the poet. I only knew her as Miss Smith. She was a very quiet person. I always saw a black dog, I think was a Labrador and which belonged to Sir Neville, was under her desk.
