Novelist Chevalier grew up in Washington and studied in Ohio before moving to London in 1984. Chevalier began writing stories in her spare time whilst working as a reference book editor. Started her first novel The Virgin Blue (published 1997) whilst on an MA course in creative writing. The film of her best-selling book Girl With a Pearl Earring (2001), based on Vermeer's anonymous portrait is released in Britain in January 2004. The Highgate-Cemetary based novel Falling Angels (2002) was followed by The Lady and The Unicorn (2003) modelled around the 16th century tapestries.
