Paralympic athlete; born with spina bifida and a wheelchair user from the age of eight, Welsh-born Grey-Thompson has won sixteen paralympic medals, including eleven golds in the 100, 200, 400 and 800 metres. She has also won the annual London Marathon six times. Grey-Thompson has worked extensively to gain equal rights for disabled people and is currently leading the UK Athletics Association's review of anti-doping policy. In 1993 she received an MBE for services to sport, in 2000 the OBE for services to sport then in 2005 was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
