Margaret McMillan
(1860-1931), EducationalistSitter in 2 portraits
Born in New York State and brought up in Inverness, McMillan began her career in Bradford, where she was known as the 'Labour Prophetess of the North'. A suffragist and a lifelong campaigner for nursery education and child health care, she succeeded in establishing medical inspections in elementary schools, pioneered with her sister Rachel, the first open-air nursery for disadvantaged children (1917). In 1930 established the Rachel McMillan College at Deptford for the training of students in nursery school work. Margaret raised funds to build a house in the countryside Margaret McMillan House was opened in 1936 by HRH The Duke of York.
