My grandmother Lady Henniker known as Mamie was born in Paris, daughter of Edward Swan Henniker an American composer and Lucie Roper Stuart. Her parents marriage was not successful and she lived with her grandmother stayng in various parts of Europe, including Germany, where as a child, she danced before Kaiser Bill. Mamie became an actress, and used to boast that she had been singing solos when Gertrude Lawrence was still in the chorus. She married my grandfather, who was a baronet and left the stage. My grandfather was in the British Expeditionary Force. He returned to this country wounded and they had a child (my mother) in 1915. My grandfather was awarded the first Military Cross in his Regiment and was fighting right through the War. My grandfather continued as a regular soldier in the Dukes and they lived in various parts of the world, with my grandmother always wishing she had stayed on the stage. She lived latterly in Halifax where our family was, and died in 1963.
