Born in Lancashire, she studied fashion at the Birmingham College of Art under Zandra Rhodes. She began her fashion career as a fashion illustrator during her last year at college and learnt her trade in the later 1970s as a designer for the Quorum line of Ossie Clark. In 1981 she set up a company, Betty Jackson Ltd, with her husband David Cohen. At the age of six, her leg was amputated as it failed to grow following a dislocation during her birth. She has won numerous awards including Designer of the Year in 1999. Since 1999 Jackson has been a visiting professor at the Royal College of Art in London. In 2007 she was awarded a CBE for services to British Industry and Exports.
