René Magritte

(1898-1967), Painter

Belgian Surrealist painter. Studied at the Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts before becoming a commercial artist and a member of the newly formed Belgian Surrealist group (in 1924). Came to prominence with his painting The Menaced Assassin (1926). Using Freudian symbols, Magritte retained the Surrealist style throughout his career. His famed paintings include The Reckless Sleeper (1928) and The Human Condition (1934).
