Mechanical Engineer. Began career as a research fellow at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge (1977-78) before becoming Director of studies in Engineering (1979-90). Since 1993 Dowling has been Professor of Engineering at the University of Cambridge. 'I enjoy the challenge of developing new approaches to model the physical world. However, as an engineer, I am particularly interested in how this improved understanding can be applied to improve products.' 'My research interests are in the areas of acoustics and vibration, unsteady fluid mechanics and flow instability.'
