Thomas Bolton Gilchrist Septimus Dalziel
(1823-1906), Painter and draughtsmanSitter in 3 portraits
Thomas was the youngest of the brothers to join the Brothers Dalziel firm. Despite training initially as a copperplate engraver, Thomas worked as an illustrator independently in London from 1843 and with the family firm from 1857. Considered the most gifted artist of the brothers, he contributed many drawings, including a hundred illustrations to the Dalziels' 'Pilgrim's Progress' (1865), and undertook final improvements to proofs before they were engraved. He also supervised the firm's apprentices and searched for new draughtsmen. An active marine and landscape painter, he exhibited work at the Royal Academy. Thomas retired to Herne Bay, Kent, in 1893, where he died some years later.
