Writer and journalist, doctor and activist. Widgery trained and qualified as a doctor and practiced as a GP for over 20 years in the East End, contributing regularly to the British Medical Journal. A writer for the underground press in the 1960s, he contributed to the first issue of Oz , taking over editorship after the jailing of its editors for obscenity (1971). Contributed to Ink, Time Out and City Limits, subsequently writing for New Statesman, Socialist Review, International Socialism and New Society. His collected journalism and autobiography appeared as Preserving Disorder: Selected Essays 1966-88 (1989). Founder of Rock Against Racism.
