Thomas Cavendish

(1560-1592), Circumnavigator

Sitter associated with 9 portraits
Cavendish's voyage of circumnavigation (1586-8) was inspired by Francis Drake's success in circumnavigating the globe (1577-80). Cavendish returned in the year of the Armada triumph with ships of plundered Spanish gold. Accounts of his voyages appear in Hakluyt's The principal navigations, voyages and discoveries of the English Nation (1598).
