Bernard Haitink

(1929-2021), Conductor; violinist

Sitter in 2 portraits
Music Director of the Royal Opera House, London for 15 years until 2002 and prior to that Music Director at Glyndebourne. His career as an orchestral conductor was equally distinguished and included posts as Chief Conductor of the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam from 1964 until 1988 and Principal Conductor of the London Philharmonic from 1967 until 1979. His recordings of the symphonies of Mahler, Bruckner and Beethoven, who were among his favourite composers, are regarded as some of the best ever made. Haitink was praised as a conductor under whom 'the strings rediscovered their bloom, the woodwind their articulacy, the brass their attack and the whole orchestra its concentration and commitment'.
