Hicks studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London before embarking on his career in interior design in 1954, with a well publicised makeover of his mother's London house. With antique dealer Tom Parr he opened Hicks and Parr (1956-9) and in 1959 his own shop David Hicks Ltd, opened on Lowndes Street, Knightsbridge. Hicks's adventurous colour combinations and furniture arrangements became associated with the 'Swinging Sixties' scene. In 1960 Hicks married Lady Pamela Mountbatten, following which he had further aristocratic and state commissions, including his design of the nightclub on the QE2 (1969). Hicks wrote eight books including David Hicks on Living - with Taste (1968).
