Barbara Hendricks

African-American Hendricks graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry and Mathematics at the age of 20. She later attended and graduated from the Juilliard School of Music in New York, where she participated in master classes led by soprano Maria Callas. During her successful musical career she has sang at major opera houses around the world performing in many lead roles. Her humanitarian work has seen her support refugee causes, giving concerts in war-torn Dubrovnik and Sarajevo. She was named UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador in 1987 and in 2002 named Honorary Lifetime Goodwill Ambassador - the only UNHCR celebrity ambassador to hold this title.
