This could be a portrait of James Cavan (1771-1859), a wealthy West Indies merchant, shipowner and banker. From the early 1830s to the late 1850s he was the principal partner at Cavan Bros, City of London merchants. He was a founder member of the Colonial Bank and the Royal Mail Steam Packet Co. At the time of this portrait Cavan was living at 8 Park Crescent, Regent's Park.
