Stephen Harvey James was Cornish and lived as a child at Alma House just outside St. Just.
His Grandfather had saved Botallack Mine and worked it for 5 years before hitting an ore seam that made their fortunes.
The sitter, his father and grandfather all shared the same name.
The sitter joined the ICS and became Secretary to the Bengal Council, hence the photo.
He retired and died in Agra, India and is buried in the Cantonment Cemetery.
