Born in Trinidad, Cyril Lionel Robert James moved to London in 1933. His first published works campaigned for the independence of the West Indies: The Life of Captain Cipriani (1932) and The Case for West-Indian Self Government (1933). James's later books included Minty Alley (1936), The Black Jacobins (1938), Mariners, Renegades and Castaways: The Story of Herman Melville and the World We Live In (1952). Widely known as a writer on cricket, his autobiography Beyond a Boundary was published in 1963.
