Eva Selina Gore-Booth

Suffragist and poet Gore-Booth came from a highly political family and she successfully campaigned to stop the execution of her sister, Constance, for her involvement in the Easter Rising of 1916. She met Esther Roper, secretary of the North England Society for Women's Suffrage in 1896 and they formed a lifelong personal and professional relationship. Together, they began campaigning for suffrage and trade unionism in Manchester, focusing on education for women in the textile and coal industry and were successful in gaining support from working class women. Goore-Booth left the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies over its support of the war effort, becoming a member of the Women's Peace Crusade in 1915 to negotiate an immediate end to World War I.
