Captain Pelham-Whelby was our landlord in the village of South Luffenham, Rutland, He lived in the Hall and we knew that he served in the Boer War. I went to his funeral in the village church at the age of 9 as a representative of the village primary school (senior boy, along with the senior girl; the school was very small!). I remember it as a grand affair (I had never been to a funeral previously) and there was a representative of the queen present. When South Luffenham Hall was cleared, I was given his leather revolver holster and ammunition pouch, which had the initials CAP embossed on them. Why CAP? According to The Peerage (http://www.thepeerage.com/p58410.htm) he was given the name of Charles Cornwallis Anderson-Pelham at birth but on 16 April 1937 his name was legally changed to Charles Cornwallis Anderson-Pelham-Welby by Royal Licence.
