(1860-1941), Pianist, composer, diplomat and politicianSitter in 16 portraits
Polish pianist and composer, politician and spokesman for Polish independence. Born to Polish parents in the village of Kurilivka, his father Jan Paderewski was an administrator of large estates. He was raised by distant relatives after his mother died before he reached the age of one. Later he lived with his father again and his father remarried. Interested in music from an early age, he began piano lessons at the age of 12, later graduating from Warsaw Conservatory in (1878) and becoming a piano tutor. He married fellow student Antonina Korsakówna from whom he became widowed several weeks after she bore him a severely handicapped son. Leaving his son in the care of friends he studied music composition in Berlin before moving to Vienna. A favourite of concert audiences around the world, he used his fame and the media for diplomatic purposes. He became the Prime Minister of Poland and also Poland's foreign minister (1919).
