Among other things, Prof. Campbell's name is associated with a (world-famous) 1920 research paper on the phenomenon of the "alkaline tide", whereby a meal encourages the secretion of stomach acid, which in turn causes a raising of pH (more alkaline environment) to develop elsewhere (in both blood and urine), thanks to bicarbonate release. This was in fact a (much-delayed) confirmation of an idea first mooted in 1823 by the great William Prout (1785-1850)
