Patience McElwee was a writer and the pictures were taken for the dust jackets of her book(s). Her books include Dark Horse, Gainfully Employed, Malice Domestic and a number of children's books. She lived at Stowe School where her husband, William McElwee was history master. Her daughter, Harriet Hall has written a book about her parents' life: Bill and Patience: An Eccentric Marriage at Stowe and Beyond.
