Petrus Jacobus Joubert (1831-1900), Commandant general and vice president of the South African Republic
Sitter in 3 portraits
Alongside the Presdient Paul Kruger, Piet Joubert was a leader of Boer resistance against the British during the war. Kruger would be elected President of the Transvaal Republic in 1883, and go on to win the subsequent elections of 1888, 1893 and 1898, each time defeating Joubert, who became Vice President. Kruger would try to negotiate favourable terms for the Boers, but when war seemed inevitable he sent an ultimatum to Britain on 9 October 1899. Strategic decisions thereafter mainly fell to Joubert as Commandant-General.
