John Armitage Stainton was born 1888, Paddington, London, to John Prout Stainton (1854-1927) and Eleanor Margaret Jackson (1866-1955). John Armitage Stainton married Janet Bertha Dewar (1895-1979) in 1918, Cambridge All Saints, Cambridgeshire, after Banns dated 31 March, 1918. Janet was from Aberdalgie, Perthshire, Scotland. John Armitage left £145,713 in his Will. John, who had been a barrister, became a Second Lieutenant, and later a Captain in the Princess Louise's Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, during World War I, for which service he received medals. He was apparently wounded at Givenchy in December, 1914, but survived. For a time his family lived at The Park, Callander, Scotland. He had also lived at 10 Hyde Park Street. Britain, Knights of the Realm record: John Armitage Stainton, Second Parliamentary Counsel to the Treasury 1937 - 46, Counsel to the Chairman of Committee, House of Lords 1946 - 53, and he was awarded the KBE (Civil) on 2 January, 1939, and the KCB (Civil) (add) on 1 June, 1953.
