My grandfather and namesake was a career ambassador with a long distinguished career. Of particular interest to the UK, would be that he was a Rhodes Scholar at Worcester College, Oxford from 1925-1927, where he met his wife-to-be, my grandmother, Virginia Parker Butterworth, who had enrolled in Oxford as a private student after being asked to leave Vassar College. He entered the Foreign Service in 1928 and was Second Secretary of Embassy and Special Representative of the Treasury Department in London from 1934-1941 under Ambassador John F. Kennedy, Sr. Later he was the American Minister (1952-1955).
