Averil Bramwell Evans

The Rougier part of the name is very likely to have come from his mother's, Elizabeth Penney Gates nee Bramwell, sister Sarah Penney Bramwell who married a Rougier in Guernsey, where the family was located for some years during the mid- 19th century. Thomas Bramwell born about 1727 owned many properties in Soho and ran a very successful business that involved fine wines, brandies and beers, and barrel making at a nearby location.. Thomas Bramwell (wife Anne Mansfield) was the earliest confirmed, and William (Panton) Bramwell took over the business, as one of the seven sons born to them. William lived at 55 Greek Street for decades and had many children including Charles Bramwell, who married Sarah Penney. Elizabeth Penney Bramwell was one of their four children. The Bramwell male descendants from Thomas were successful in law and merchantising. Many descendants showed a talent in science, maths and design. Only the Gates family were wealthy through the dairy farming business of Walter Valder Gates, husband of Elizabeth Penney Bramwell. WRBS Gates developed the technique of drying milk and started the marketing of this product to Africa and other world markets. The Brand name Cow and Gates followed.
