Charles Thomas Studd
(1860-1931), Cricketer and missionarySitter in 1 portrait
The Studd brothers were renowned gentlemen cricketers; they were the sons of Edward Studd, who had made his fortune in India. Educated at Eton and Cambridge they excelled at cricket and dominated the scene in the early 1880s. At Cambridge the brothers achieved consecutive victories from 1882 to 1884 captaining the university team. They were known as 'the set of Studd' and are seen here wearing their sporting attire. Charles Thomas Studd, the youngest, was a renowned batsman and became the most famous of three brothers. Influenced by the evangelical church, he left the sport in 1884 and devoted himself to missionary work in China, England, America, India and Africa.
