William Notman

(1826-1891), Photographer

Artist associated with 31 portraits
Scottish-born Notman became Canada's most famous photographer. His portraits, tableaux and montages of Canadian life earned him the title of Queen Victoia's Photographer to the Queen. He emigrated to Montreal in 1856 and opened a small portrait studio where he prospered from the start. He achieved recognition after the Grand Trunk Railway hired him to document the building of the Victoria Bridge across the St Lawrence River. His cartes-des-visite of the bridge were extremely popular and earned him the attention of the queen. Her interest in him led to his renown, and by the time he was thirty, he had established studios in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Nova Scotia as well as two in the US.
