Howard Barker

Playwright and poet. Barker studied at the University of Sussex and his early plays, such as Cheek (1970) and Fair Slaughter (1977), were performed at the Royal Court Theatre and by the Royal Shakespeare Company. The theatre company The Wrestling School, formed in 1988, is dedicated to his unique style of tragedy and dark comedy, defined as 'Theatre of Catastrophe'. His volumes of poetry include The Breath of the Crowd (1986) and Lullabies for the Impatient (1988).
