Christopher Newman Hall was my Great Uncle, he was one of thirteen children of John Vine Hall who was the proprietor of the Maidstone Gazette. One of his brothers, also named John Vine Hall was the first captain of I.K.Brunell's Great Iron Ship, known as the Great Eastern. He took it on it's maiden voyage to New York in 1860. Newman Hall was known in the United States as "the protestant divine" and he was invited to stay with President Lincoln at the White House. He was responsible for several lecture tours around America, where he preached a strong anti-slavery message.
The New York Stock Exchange was closed for 5 minutes when he preached there. He also co-wrote an important message from President Lincoln with Beecher. After Lincoln's assassination he raised enough money to build a tribute to Lincoln in London at the end of Westminster Bridge Road.
