Drake was particularly close to her aunt Beatrice Webb through their shared interest in women's working rights and their membership to the Fabian Society and Fabian Women's Group. Writing reports for the Women's Industrial Council between 1913 - 1915 on women's working conditions, Drake's inquiries into women working in the retail and service industries were published in the Women's Industrial News. In 1917 Women in the Engineering Trades was published and her research became focused on the exploitation of women during the wartime effort and within trade unions. Drake became a member of the Education Committee at the London County Council and successfully campaigned for the introduction of Comprehensive Schools in 1947.
