This gentleman was a fine benefactor to the town of Deal. The Charles Road Football Ground is named in his honour as is the street, Charles Road. Nearby Bruce Close, another residential street, is named after him.

Sir Ernest Bruce Charles lived in Deal at 133 Beach Street, Deal, now called Bruce House. He was by all accounts a very kind man and a great benefactor to the town - establishing, amongst other things, the Deal Rowing Club. We now live in Bruce House which has a happy atmosphere we we think comes from Sir Ernest !
