Alberto Korda (Alberto Díaz Gutiérrez)

Cuban photographer, Korda was born Alberto Díaz Gutiérrez in Havana. The son of a railway worker he took various jobs before he became a photographer's assistant. He earned money by photographing special events, running between the studio and venue to develop and then sell his prints as souvenirs. He formed Korda Studios in partnership with Luis Pierce in 1956. Korda is best known for his portrait of Ernesto 'Che' Guevara taken in 1960 when he was a photographer for the Cuban newspaper Revolución. The portrait has become one of the most iconic images of revolution and protest. After the revolution, Korda became Fidel Castro's personal photographer for 10 years.
