Regarding Mr Jones's comment re the sitter possibly being Anne Boleyn, renowned art historian and portrait expert Dr Bendor Grosvenor has challenged this identification in an article at http://www.arthistorynews.com/articles/3904_A_new_lost_portrait_of_Anne_Boleyn and the sitter's costume, which dates to the early 1520s and is of a high status and wealthy woman, does not point to it being Anne Boleyn. Also Hans Holbein the Younger was not in England in the early 1520s. Dr Grosvenor researched the original portrait a few years ago and found no links to Anne Boleyn.

Further to comments yesterday. The 1798 engraving of Lady Bergavenny can be seen at the Yale Univ. Lewis Walpole Library site. A photo of the Victorian copy of the Strawberry Hill Tudor painting can currently be seen on ebay uk - No. 1317640672, or the NPG may already have the print but not on digital display. The original Tudor painting appears to be by, or after Holbein. It is quite a complex composition for the period.

This picture is called Lady Joanna Bergavenny (ie. Abergavenny). It is a copy of a Strawberry Hill portrait painted around 1530 more than twenty years after Lady A died. Copies of the same painting were made around 1798 and in around 1860s. The painting from the Holbein Room in Walpole's collection may depict Anne Boleyn. She has a large initial A on the necklace and the Victorian copy shows a swelling on the neck.
