Ian Breakwell studied at Derby College of Art and at the West of England College, Bristol. Breakwell wrote fictional texts and diaries, made collages, drawings, tapes and films, staged events and theatre performances as part of his practice. The relationship between word and image was central to his work and he is perhaps best known for his diaries, made between 1964 and 1985, which have appeared in book form, and as two series of programmes made for Channel Four Television
