VICTORIAN MILITARY REDCOAT OIL PORTRAIT, CIRCA 1870.
This interesting work was produced by Captain A. G. Tod as is loudly stated on his original label on the back of the painting. Alexander George Tod was born in 1825 and was at one time a Captain in Her Majesty’s 1st Madras Light Cavalry. Retiring from the Army he is recorded in the late 1860’s as a photographer in Cheltenham. He died at Clifton, near Bristol, in 1902.
Captain Tod’s occupation upon retirement is a clue to the real nature of this picture. It is a genuine hand painted oil painting but appears to have been done on top of a photograph. The painting has never been out of its frame and the sugar paper backing that bears the label is mostly intact so it is safe to assume that this type of painting was a specialisation of Captain Tod and may well have won him the Medaille D’Honneur that he picked up at the International Exhibition in Paris in 1867. It seems such an obvious thing to do in a genre that requires an accurate representation of the sitter. I must say that I have never seen another.
The painting is 12.1/8” x 9.3/4” and is in fine condition. The frame, 18” x 15.1/2”, is basically good but is losing some of the gesso.
