Peter Kennard

(1949-), Photographer

Artist associated with 3 portraits
Peter Kennard was born in London in 1949. He is one of the UK’s most important political artists. His adoption of photomontage in the late 1960s renewed its association with radical politics, and his images now define the response to conflict and crisis since that period, particularly for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. He studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art from 1965 to 1967, and at the Slade School of Fine Art from 1967 to 1970. He graduated from the Royal College of Art with an MA in Fine Art in 1979. He has a long history of creating political art, with a career spanning almost fifty years. His selected shows include: Photomontages for Peace, Palais des Nations, Geneva, 1989; Stop Painting and Photomontages, 1973-91, Kent Gallery, New York, 1992; Break Up - Eastern Europe, Laing Gallery, Newcastle, 1992; Our Financial Times, Gimpel Fils, London (with Ken Livingstone MP, 1995), and Decoration, Gimpel Fils, London, 2004.
