Malcolm Sim Longair

Jacksonian Professor of Natural Philosophy (1991-2008) and Head of the Department of Physics at the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge (1998-2005). Longair's research concentrates on high energy astrophysics and astrophysical cosmology. From 1980 to 1990, he held the joint posts of Astronomer Royal for Scotland, Regius Professor of Astronomy at the University of Edinburgh and Director of the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh. Longair was President of the Royal Astronomical Society (1996-8). The second edition of his Theoretical Concepts in Physics was published in 2003.
