Norman Jay

Born to West-Indian parents in Notting Hill, London, Jay displayed an interest in music at the age of eight when he bought his first record and played it at a cousin's 10th birthday. Inspired by his father's extensive collection of original 60's Jazz, blu beat, ska and rock steady reggae from Jamaica he began developed a passion for all types of black music. Whilst visiting relatives in Brooklyn, New York, he landed his first block party after which he chose his career path as a DJ. Known for pushing bounderies, he controversially played Soul, Funk and Disco at the Notting Hill Carnival in the early 80's. Awarded an MBE for "deejaying and services to music" in the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Birthday Honours List (2002).
