Edward Spence Mott sometime soldier, actor, stage writer, racing journalist, tipster and loafer was born at Lichfield, Staffordshire on 7 April 1844. He was one of at least seven children – a number of whom died in infancy - of William Mott [1814-1887], a local magistrate, and his first wife Louisa Anne [c. 1815-1863]. Mott wrote under the name of 'Nathaniel Gubbins'. He is best remembered for his very readable, but often inaccurate, autobiography A Mingled Yarn [1898]. Surprisingly after a life with 'no regard for money', his probated estate was £2,700.
