I am researching into the history of the house that stood where my house is now in Woodmansterne, Surrey. The house was called Court Haw built in the 17th century and demolished in the 20th. I was interested in the occupant in the mid to late 19th century – Mrs Rosa Mildred, a widow. The 1861 census records Charlotte E Mildred (23) and her brother, Daniel Mildred (22), also in residence, described as Mrs Mildred’s step daughter and step son. I was curious as to who her husband had been and in the course of my research came across the fact that Charlotte had a portrait in the National Portrait Gallery Collection [2155]. It is a photograph taken in 1861 the year of her marriage and reason for her visit to Woodmansterne as she was married in the church there in April 1861. The portrait was taken in February of the same year. Here is a brief summary of what I found out.
Charlotte Elizabeth Mildred
Born: 1837 Woodford Essex; baptised on 8th June. Father: Daniel Mildred (banker) died June 1858. Mother: Emily Mildred (nee Pearse) died December 1839. Married: William Henry Lance* (clerk, later curate then rector in Somerset) on 10th April 1861 at St Peter’s Church, Woodmansterne, Surrey. From then on, the census records her and her family living in Somerset, producing 5 sons and 2 daughters. She died on 13th August 1914 (aged 77) and buried at Buckland St Mary, Somerset.
* William Henry Lance also has his photograph in the National Portrait Gallery [2061] also taken in February 1861. He was born in 1823 in Rome, Italy and described as a British Subject. When he married in 1861 his residence was Thurlbear, Somerset. After marriage he lived in Somerset and became a curate and was in the 1891 census as the rector of Buckland St Mary, Somerset. In 1911 he was living in the Rectory at West Bagborough, Somerset. He died on 29th October 1911 at the age of 88 and buried at Buckland St Mary, Somerset.
