Caroline Elizabeth Murray was known as Carrie. Olive Edis was the daughter of her first cousin, Mary Edis (née Murray). It is said that Carrie (whose father Dr John Murray had been a pioneer photographer in India) started Olive's career by giving her a camera, and that this photograph was Olive's first attempt at a portrait.
