Faisal II, King of Iraq

(1935-1958), King of Iraq, reigned 1939-58

Sitter in 24 portraits
The last King of Iraq and the only son of Iraq's second king, Ghazi, and his wife Queen Aliya (daughter of 'Ali bin Hussein, King of the Hijaz and Grand Sharif of Mecca). Faisal's father died in a car crash when Faisal was three years old; his uncle 'Abd al-Ilah served as regent until Faisal came of age in 1953. Educated at the royal palace, he lived with his mother at Grove Lodge, Berkshire during World War II. He attended Harrow School with his cousin Hussein, who he would later build an alliance with when he became King Hussein of Jordan. King Faisal was executed during the 14th July Revolution, marking the end of the Hashemite monarchy and the beginning of Iraq's formation as a republic.
