American John Camel Heenan came to England to fight in a bare-knuckle contest against British Tom Sayers on the 17th April 1860 at Farnborough, Hampshire. Although bare-knuckle fighting was technically illegal, famous faces were rumoured to have been seen in the crowd, including Charles Dickens and William Makepeace Thackeray. The fight lasted 42 rounds over 2 hours and was declared a draw.
