Artist associated with 84 portraits
James Heath was apprenticed in 1771 to the engraver Joseph Collyer the Younger, after which he was employed by the Robinson family of booksellers from 1779 to 1804. Between 1780 and 1788 Heath produced 100 prints for the publisher Harrison's Novelist's Magazine from designs by Thomas Stothard. He engraved some plates for John Boydell's Shakspeare Gallery, and in 1802 published on his own behalf a six-volume set of Shakespeare illustrated with engravings after works by Stothard and Henry Fuseli. In 1791 Heath was elected an associate of the Royal Academy, and in 1794 he was appointed historical engraver to George III, a title that he held under different monarchs until his retirement.
